Do Affirmations Really Work?

Updated: Jul 24

Have you ever wondered why humans can talk? Or the usefulness of language beyond communicating? At SenterME we have an entire curriculum dedicated to reshaping and building a new language that serves you in emotional wellness and stress relief, Talk That T.A.L.K. But questions are circulating on the validity of the effectiveness of affirming yourself daily or at all. So let's first explore language, its influence, and whether affirmations actually improve your life in any way.

There are thousands of different languages in this world. Through verbal language itself, there are 7,117 ways to tell someone you love them. Just as many ways to tell someone your stomach hurts and just as many ways to ask someone about their day. Whether we are expressing love, pain, or compassion, language is a tool for amplification. It reveals our thoughts, our beliefs, and our emotions the makings of our internal environment. Language is also a tool for manipulation. It can conceal the truth, disguise it, and make an enemy of it. Language is a tool for creation. It can stimulate emotions, influence ideas, and shape beliefs. As humans we even take on the language of others after being around them for an extended period or if they make a big enough impact on us. Their words, phrases, answers, and questions, can easily become our own.

Dr. Emoto, a world-renowned Japanese scientist and author of Hidden Messages in the Water, conducted experiments that demonstrated that water is shaped by environment, thoughts, and emotions. His work pushed science forward in illuminating how our language impacts our reality. In his book, Dr. Emoto demonstrates how water exposed to loving, benevolent, and compassionate human intention results in aesthetically pleasing physical molecular formations in the water while water exposed to fearful and discordant human intentions results in disconnected, disfigured, and “unpleasant” physical molecular formations. He did this through Magnetic Resonance Analysis technology and high-speed photographs.

More than half of the human body is made up of water. We can shift the energetic field of our consciousness (being) by harnessing the power of language, our words. Our language can create and amplify high vibrational energy within ourselves and attract like energy to expand and evolve.

Studies show that when experiencing depression, we tend to use language that fuels it whether with our voice, thoughts, or beliefs. Our perspective shifts and with it our reality. Research has also revealed that anxiety can create a pseudo-reward system where in the event something negative happens we credit our worrying thoughts as some form of warning. When we affirm ourselves with love, security, and positivity daily we are shaping and redefining our internal environment increasing our sensitivity to language that is fear-stricken, negative, and anxious. It's not a matter of wishful thinking but a matter of supporting the improvement and growth of our emotional well-being and self-awareness by using our language to uncover the truth and align our thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors with it. With intention, emotion, and gratitude our language can encourage neuroplasticity and even neurogenesis enabling us to break free from depression, anxiety, and self-limiting beliefs.

Affirmations can change your life when you learn to articulate with love and knowing.
